Lipid assessment in Tangier: cholesterol and triglycerides

Lipid assessment: preventing cardiovascular diseases

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Lipid assessment is an essential prevention tool. At the Tangier International Laboratory, we carry out complete lipid assessments with results in 4 hours.

What does the lipid profile measure?

  • Total cholesterol: overall value, ideally less than 2 g/L
  • LDL cholesterol (“bad”): is deposited in the arteries. The goal depends on your risk factors
  • HDL cholesterol (“good”): protects the arteries. Ideally greater than 0.40 g/L
  • Triglycerides: linked to diet and excess weight. Normal: less than 1.50 g/L

How to prepare?

A 12 hour fast is recommended for accurate results (especially for triglycerides). Water is allowed. Avoid alcohol 48 hours before.

How often?

A first assessment is recommended from the age of 20, then every 5 years in the absence of risk factors. More frequently if you are hypertensive, diabetic, smoker or overweight.

Consult our lipid balance page or make an appointment.
