Absent from Morocco for more than thirty years, diphtheria has been back in the health news since late September 2026: confirmed family clusters in Souss-Massa, then cases in other regions, and active surveillance extended by the Ministry of Health to the whole country, Tangier included. What the affected children have in common: missing or incomplete vaccination. Many Tangier residents ask us the same question: "where can I get tested, and am I protected?". Here is what you need to know, and what our medical laboratory in Mesnana, Avenue Moulay Rachid, can do for you.
What is diphtheria?
Diphtheria is a bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It spreads through respiratory droplets (coughing, sneezing, close contact) and, more rarely, through contact with infected wounds. Its severity comes from a toxin produced by the bacterium, which can affect the heart, nerves and kidneys. Without treatment, mortality is around 5 to 10%. It is a notifiable disease: every suspected case triggers an investigation and contact tracing by the health authorities.
What are the symptoms?
Signs appear 2 to 5 days after exposure: sore throat, moderate fever, fatigue, swollen neck glands. The most characteristic sign is a greyish or whitish false membrane on the tonsils, pharynx or nose, which bleeds when you try to remove it and can make swallowing and breathing difficult. In severe forms, the neck swells markedly ("bull neck").
Important: if there is a sore throat with a false membrane, especially in a child who is unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated, see a doctor or go to the emergency department immediately. Treatment (antitoxin and antibiotics) is started without waiting for laboratory results. The test confirms the diagnosis; it must never delay it.
How is the diphtheria test done?
Diagnosis relies on a throat swab (pharyngeal or nasopharyngeal swab, taken from the false membrane when present). The sample is then analysed by:
- bacterial culture on specific media, to isolate Corynebacterium diphtheriae, completed if needed by an antibiogram;
- PCR to detect the bacterium and the toxin gene (tox), faster than culture;
- confirmation that the strain produces toxin by the national reference laboratory, in line with the Ministry of Health protocol.
The sample should ideally be taken before starting antibiotics. No special preparation is needed, no fasting. The doctor often adds a CBC and a CRP to assess infection and inflammation.
Where to get a diphtheria test in Tangier?
At the Laboratoire International, Mesnana district (Avenue Moulay Rachid, Tangier), the throat swab is taken on site by our team, with a medical prescription, Monday to Friday from 7 am to 7 pm and Saturday from 7 am to 3 pm, without an appointment. Specialised tests are performed in partnership with our reference network Cerba Lab: PCR results are available in 24 to 72 hours, culture in 2 to 4 days. Results can be viewed in your online results area. Any positive result is sent without delay to the prescribing doctor and reported to the health authorities, as required by law.
The laboratory is easy to reach from Mesnana, Val Fleuri and Aïda Village, a short walk from ENCG and the Faculty of Legal Sciences, near the Mesnana roundabout. Find preparation, turnaround time and price on the test page.
Who should be tested?
The test is not mass screening: on medical advice, it concerns
- people with suggestive symptoms;
- close contacts of a confirmed case (family, class, nursery), who are checked for carriage even without symptoms, alongside preventive antibiotic treatment and a vaccination update decided by the health authorities. For a whole family or young children in Mesnana and the rest of Tangier, our home sample collection saves you the trip.
If you have neither symptoms nor contact with a case, the right question is not "do I have diphtheria?" but "am I protected?".
Am I protected? Checking your immunity
The diphtheria vaccine is part of the national immunisation schedule (combined vaccine from 2 months of age, then boosters in childhood). In adults, protection fades over time: a booster every 10 years is recommended — and many adults have never had one.
Two simple steps:
- Check the vaccination record of your children and your own. At least three doses are needed for full protection, followed by boosters.
- If in doubt (lost record, old vaccination, person at risk, travel), a diphtheria antitoxin antibody test (serology) tells you whether your antibody level is protective and whether a booster is needed. It is a simple blood test, no fasting required — the same principle as rubella serology before pregnancy. Performed via Cerba Lab, results within 5 to 7 working days.
With vaccine stocks under pressure, this test avoids using an unnecessary dose and helps the doctor prioritise people who are truly unprotected.
Frequently asked questions
Are there diphtheria cases in Tangier?
At the time of publication, the confirmed cases announced by the Ministry of Health concern other regions of the Kingdom; active surveillance covers the whole country, including Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma. Reliable information comes from the Ministry and the Regional Health Directorate, not from social media.
Where can I get a diphtheria test in Tangier Mesnana?
At the Laboratoire International, Avenue Moulay Rachid, Mesnana district (near ENCG and the Mesnana roundabout): throat swab with a prescription and vaccine-immunity serology, without an appointment, Monday to Saturday from 7 am. Home sample collection available in Tangier.
Can I get tested without a prescription?
The diagnostic test (throat swab) requires a prescription, as it is part of medical care and mandatory notification. The immunity check serology can be requested after advice from your doctor or our team.
My child has a sore throat — should they be tested?
The vast majority of sore throats are viral or caused by streptococcus. A diphtheria test is discussed with the doctor if a false membrane is present, if the child is not (or not fully) vaccinated, or if they have been in contact with a case. If in doubt, see a doctor: the doctor decides. A simple throat swab can also identify a common bacterial tonsillitis.
How long does it take to get the result?
PCR gives a result in 24 to 72 hours; culture takes 2 to 4 days; confirmation of toxin production by the reference laboratory may take a few more days. Diphtheria serology is reported within 5 to 7 working days. Treatment of a suspected case does not depend on these timelines.
How much does a diphtheria test cost in Tangier?
The price of the swab with culture/PCR and of diphtheria serology is given to you immediately at reception or via WhatsApp. Depending on your coverage (AMO, insurance), reimbursement may be possible on presentation of the prescription.
Is an adult vaccinated in childhood still protected?
Not necessarily. Without a booster for more than 10 years, protection may be insufficient. Your vaccination record or a diphtheria serology will settle the question.
Do contacts of a case need to isolate?
Close contacts identified by the health investigation receive a swab, preventive antibiotic treatment and a vaccination update according to the authorities' instructions. Follow the instructions given by the health team that contacts you.
