What is the difference between serology and PCR?
Serology detects antibodies produced by your immune system in response to the virus. It shows whether you have been exposed to the virus. PCR goes further: it directly detects the virus itself and measures its quantity (viral load).
When is hepatitis PCR prescribed?
- After positive serology to confirm active infection
- To measure the viral load before treatment
- To monitor the effectiveness of antiviral treatment
- To check virological cure at the end of treatment
Hepatitis C is curable
Thanks to direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), hepatitis C is now curable in more than 95% of cases with treatment lasting 8 to 12 weeks. PCR monitoring is essential to confirm recovery.
Results and deadlines
Hepatitis PCR results are available in 3 to 5 business days. Viral load is expressed in IU/ml (international units per milliliter).
