It is the most common question before a blood draw at our medical analysis laboratory in Tangier — and an approximate answer costs a wasted trip. Here is what fasting exactly means, which analyses require it, and what remains allowed.
What fasting means
Fasting means no food and no drink other than water for the hours before the draw — usually 8 to 12 hours depending on the prescribed test. Plain water remains allowed, and is even recommended: a well-hydrated patient has veins that are easier to draw from.
Not compatible with fasting: coffee and tea even unsweetened, juice, tobacco and chewing gum. All of them can alter certain measured parameters.
The tests that classically require fasting
Fasting matters when a meal directly changes what is being measured:
- fasting glucose — it is its very definition: sugar from a meal would distort the result;
- the lipid panel (cholesterol, triglycerides) — dietary fats circulate in the blood for several hours;
- certain parameters of the liver and kidney panels, depending on the prescription.
Many other routine tests require no fasting at all — serologies, blood counts, TSH in most cases. The practical rule: your prescription is what counts, and when in doubt, call us before coming rather than after.
The mistakes that bring patients back the next day
The three most frequent: the "just a small" morning coffee, the juice taken with a medication, and fasting too long — beyond 16 hours, some parameters shift as well. A fast of 8 to 12 hours, from the previous evening to the morning of the draw, covers almost every request.
For your regular medications, what to do depends on the treatment and the test: your prescriber tells you, not a blog article. Simply tell the person drawing your blood what you have taken.
In practice, in Tangier
The simplest is to come in the morning, fasting since the previous evening. The laboratory welcomes you Monday to Saturday, and home sample collection exists for those who cannot travel — fasting is prepared the same way. If a prescription leaves you unsure, call us: thirty seconds on the phone saves a round trip.
