Why pregnancy favours urinary infections

Two mechanisms combine. Pregnancy hormones relax the urinary tract, slowing urine flow; and the growing uterus compresses the bladder and ureters. Urine stagnates more — and stagnant urine is where bacteria, E. coli first, multiply more easily.

Pregnancy's specificity: treating even without symptoms

Outside pregnancy, bacteria present in urine without any symptom are generally not treated. When pregnant, it is the opposite: this "asymptomatic bacteriuria" is treated, because left untreated it more often progresses to pyelonephritis — the kidney infection, with fever — which exposes the pregnancy to complications. Drink regularly throughout the day, don't hold urine in, urinate after intercourse: simple habits that reduce stagnation. And above all: never self-medicate while pregnant — neither an antibiotic from an old prescription nor a "natural" product without advice — every treatment must be validated by a professional who knows your pregnancy.
